Mary’s Story
Joseph’s Story
When the ordinary is extraordinary
Nativity (Luke 2:8-20) Georges de La Tour 1644, Louvre
First Christmas worksite visit
And there were shepherds living out in the fields near by, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.’
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
‘Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favour rests.’
When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.’
So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. (Luke 2: 8-20 NIVUK)
God still visits …
The shepherds are ordinary people pursuing their everyday activities until God disturbs their status quo. Overwhelmingly actually. Encountering a terrifying presence they learn that a “saviour for all people” has been born today. Specifically, this saviour can be found now, in Bethlehem, and may be identified in the ordinariness of a cloth wrapped infant in a manger.
Such a visitation could be ignored. The shepherds may have passed on the opportunity to verify the report. Instead they press into the insights given them and encounter the saviour of all people. The news of a saviour, and perhaps the honour of being insiders to this intervention by God, fills them with thankfulness. They return “praising and glorifying God”.
For most of us, our invitation into this story is often the inverse of the shepherds. The invitation begins with the ordinary rather than with the equivalent of a terrifying angelic encounter. Maybe we have a suspicion that there has to be a presence behind the universe, or there is more to the world than that which can be seen, heard, measured or touched. The ordinary somehow hints at the extraordinary, at the transcendent.
Whatever the source of our wondering, God would have us press in to encounter the saviour Jesus. The one who saves to give Love, Purpose, Joy, Peace and Hope to our lives. May you encounter the Goodness of God in Jesus this Christmas. A saviour who opens Eternity for all. (John 11:25)
